The brief

Two keen cooks who entertain most weekends needed a kitchen that worked hard on a Tuesday and looked composed on a Saturday night.

The challenge

A dark rear extension with a low ceiling, and a request for a full-size island without blocking the route to the garden.

The solution

We pushed the tall storage to one wall and slimmed the island to a cantilevered slab with seating on one side. Pale lacquer bounces light deep into the room, while leather stools and crystal pendants add warmth after dark.
